Feb 27 (Reuters) - National Bank of Greece (NBG) NBGr.AT, the country's second-largest lender by market value, reported on Friday an 11.5% drop in 2025 net profit before one-offs, but said it beat its own guidance as strong loan growth and higher fees helped offset the drag from lower interest rates.
Full-year net profit for 2025 totalled 1.26 billion euros ($1.49 billion), down from to 1.42 billion in 2024.
The group's earnings per share before one‑offs dropped to 1.38 euros, from 1.4 euros the previous year, with a return on tangible equity (RoTE) at 15.5%, which fulfilled its guidance of over 15% for the year.
Performing loans rose by 3.5 billion euros in 2025, or 10% year-on-year, exceeding guidance, driven by corporate credit growth and a recovery in retail, particularly in small business and consumer lending, NBG said.
Net fee and commission income also rose 10% for the year, boosted by higher investment product fees, treasury sales and loan origination fees, with mutual fund-related income up 70% on strong cross‑selling of investment products, it added.
The board will propose the distribution of 60% of 2025 profits and intends to propose an additional 300 million euro capital return in 2026, subject to approvals.
Looking ahead, NBG's business plan for 2026-2028 targets sustained profitability, with RoTE rising to 17% by the end of 2028, credit expansion exceeding 10 billion euros, and continued high single-digit fee growth.
