Google Glass debuted with great fanfare before getting caught up in privacy
questions. But even though Google stopped selling the first version of Glass,
the tech company isn't shelving the product yet. WSJ Google Reporter Alistair
Barr joins us now with details. Good afternoon, Alistair. Hi there. So what's
the status of Google Glass? Well, it's safe to say it's not dead. That's
probably the best way to put it. Eric Schmidt told us that Google is not killing
the project. It's too important for that and they're getting it ready under Tony
Fadell who's Head of the Nest Division at Google. They're getting it ready for
users in Eric Schmidt's words. So given all the hoopla we've had recently over
Apple Watch, wearables are a hot sector, but do Smart glasses have a harder
barrier of entry with consumers? Yeah. The three types of wearables that
research firm IDC slices the market up into, and one of them is fitness pants
which are relatively cheap and what we do with Smartphones and then the Smart
watches which are usually more complex and then Smart Glasses and these complex
wearables, they rely on their own Internet connection. That is a bigger jump,
one because it's on your face, and it gets in the way of you interacting with
people; whereas the watch is on the arm. And two, it's a lot more expensive and
so that makes the question about what are these apps that are going to be on
these devices to make it worthwhile. Did Google hint at all what's next for
Glass? Eric said that it's going to be getting ready for users. Now, that could
be consumers or it could be companies. Google is making the first version of
Glass still available to some enterprises, software companies that have software
for companies to use Glass and things like field tests and repairs and things
like that. But Tony Fadell, the Head of Nest, he invented the iPod Apple here so
he has a vast experience in consumer gadgets so that the thinking is that it's
still going to be a consumer device that is going to have another go with it.
Alright. Thank you very much for your time, Alistair. Thanks
