Sept 3 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq and S&P 500 ended lower on
Wednesday, dragged down by a more than 4 percent drop in shares
of Apple AAPL.O , while the Dow finished slightly higher.
Apple slid 4.2 percent to $98.94, the stock's worst daily
percentage decline since Jan. 28. At least one brokerage mulled
downgrading the stock as Apple grappled with a possible security
breach of its iCloud service a week before the launch of its new
iPhone. ID:nL1N0R41TL
The stock was the biggest drag on both the Nasdaq and S&P
500. The S&P technology sector .SPLRCT fell 0.7 percent,
making it the day's worst-performing sector.
Helping the Dow, shares of Exxon Mobil XOM.N bounced back
from Tuesday's losses along with oil prices. Exxon rose 0.6
percent, while Chevron CVX.N was up 0.3 percent. U.S. crude
oil prices ended more than 2 percent higher.
Investors were cautious ahead of the European Central Bank's
policy meeting Thursday, which could give clues on whether the
ECB will launch a bond-buying program.
"There's a bit of trepidation about the upcoming ECB
meeting," said Douglas Cote, chief market strategist at Voya
Investment Management in New York.
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 10.72 points or
0.06 percent, to 17,078.28, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 1.56 points

Nasdaq, 1,738 issues fell and 986 advanced for a 1.76-to-1 ratio
favoring decliners.
The broad S&P 500 index posted 57 new 52-week highs and no

From earlier in the day:

while shares of China Mobile CHL.N are up 2.8 percent and

In the wider ADR market, the BNY Mellon index of Asian ADRs
.BKAS is up 0.64 percent, while the broader index of leading

U.S.-listed shares of Argentine companies also are gaining,

bill designed to sidestep U.S. court rulings that led to the
South American country's July debt default. ID:nL1N0R40YB
Among the day's most-actively traded ADRs are Brazilian oil

falling under $100 a share for the first time since Aug. 20 in

is the most actively traded name on the Nasdaq, with more than
100 million shares exchanging hands, well above Apple's 50-day
average of 45.84 million shares.
Investors are concerned that at the Sept. 9 launch event,
Apple will not announce any new products that could drive more
accelerated growth. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy
Hargreaves said it was time to take profit in the company, which
is up about 25 percent year-to-date. ID:nL1N0R41HE
Other analysts saw the decline as a reaction to Samsung
Electronics Co's 005930.KS introduction of its own
large-screen smartphone. It also faces scrutiny after individual
iCloud accounts were recently hacked and nude pictures of
celebrities were posted online.
