Hi,

I'm launching an educational investing YouTube channel in the next few weeks and part of the process will be tracking portfolios across various markets over time.

I'm after recommendations for portfolio tracking software.

Ideally it would allow me to ...

upload transactions
handle share splits
dividends
provide analysis of the portfolio
- country allocation
- size allocation (Small cap, mid cap, etc)
- sector/industry breakdown
- performance, e.g. sharpe ratio

It would definitely need to cater with mulitple markets including UK, USA, Major European exchanges (France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Italy), Australia & New Zealand

Other markets would be welcome too India, Japan, China, Korea.

Ideally I would be able to publish the portfolio so viewers can transparently see the transactions and performance of the portfolio.

Sharesight looked interesting but it appears to be buggy.

It could be that I simply use Google spreadsheets but that's not ideal as I know the Google finance API doesn't cover some of the smaller European companies let alone more obscure companies across the world.

Any feedback is greatly received.

I did like some aspects of sharescope, the more flexible screening tools, however I was annoyed by the fact you cannot view your relative performance against an index against different time periods. It is so close to being exactly what I need for portfolio tracking, but it just falls short for me.

I was going to attempt to create my own portfolio tracking system in tableau and data scrape using python.

I do feel there is a gap in the market for a sophisticated portfolio tracking service.

So I'm launching the investment channel (coming soon) and personally I cannot justfy the cost of Sharepad/ShareScope whilst the channel has yet to prove itself. I only need the Portfolio aspect of their product and personally I don't like the user interface.

For now I'm going to be canabalising this Google Spreadsheet ...

What I like about having a Google Spreadsheet is that channel followers can access the Portfolio to track the approaches that I am using.

I've always been keen to be transparent and the visibility of the Stockopedia screens has always been important to me.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what that's doing.
Have a look at my other post as they handle the google and yahoo finance stock quote retrievals in scripts.

They seem to work well too.
They spreadsheet also introduced me to timer based script running which allows you to build and record a portfolio value giving a daily snapshot of the portfolio.

This can be used to chart the portfolio value over time.

Hi Phil

The importxml formula pulls the share price data from yahoo (for a company I own called Kitron).
When the formula didn't work (I've no idea why it would haphazardly stop working) there would be an error in my entire portfolio, so I added an iferror to pick up a typed in value from another cell.

I really am not a technical expert at all!

I'll check out your link for another yahoo share price extraction method.

Hi Phil - two that I'm aware of which might provide what you are looking for are in the links below. I can't say that I have used them as I tend to use a mix of Stockopedia / Sharepad and spreadsheets. Hope this might help and good luck with your venture.

I'll take a closer look later ... I'm currently neck deep in a DaVinci Resolve tutorial (video editor) which I have to say is an excellent and best of all FREE product.

The downside is, it's so fully featured it's overwhelming.

Yes I agree with the sentiment that there is not really a good tracking portfolio system out there and I too was thinking of doing one in Python

I'm surprised to hear that ShareScope doesn't offer that functionality.

SharePad's 'value-on-date' view can show portfolio performance against a selected index (or listed security) between two arbitrary dates, as the tutorial page below demonstrates:

I thought that Sharepad was good too, until I found that some of my holdings couldn't be added within it - I think they were on the Warsaw stock exchange.

Apart from that, it seemed pretty perfect. My hope is that Stockopedia in the long term can match Sharepad in terms of portfolio management - I'd have everything I needed in terms of analysis including Capital Gains calculations, performance etc.

sharepad for at took me a few weeks to get used to but now I find it very quick to use. Loads much faster than Stockopedia.

Looking at charts is fast and very flexible.

The Sharepad CGT and dividend calculator in the portfolios is superb. worth the fee alone. That’s the only reason I keep it. ( still has one bug which I now know about so can work around it)

It Also pulls Divs from funds including Accumulation funds were are other wise an utter PITA to calculate.

However the portfolio valuation / gain number is useless (no different to everyone else’s)

it uses a “modified Dietz method” Which is supposed to take into account money flows in and out of a portfolio.

However if you have share dealing accounts with various platforms, moving money from one to another causes total havoc and the % returns it calculates is garbage.

I don’t use stockopedia portfolio tracker at all.

Have you checked the performance on portfolios that have cash added/withdrawn. Their modified diets method causes the results to be utterly useless.

I spent some time with their support and they confirmed the results.

If you add cash to a portfolio and don’t invest it, the portfolio performance tool does some wizardry and produces a positive return even though the portfolio had only 2 transactions and clearly showed a loss.

Yes - what I'm currently doing is when I add the cash, I always add it with the date set to the start date of the portfolio. It doesn't skew the results that way. Its a bit of a hack, which I hate plus I don't know what I should do if I ever wanted to take money out of the portfolio.

If you are going to build your own platform then I would suggest purchasing a book on "Modern Portfolio Theory". I would then incorporate the Efficient Frontier and some of the other salient metrics used by the investment bank to analyse portfolios. I've yet to see anything like this available to the public but all of the Investment Banks, hedge funds and so on use this.

There are a few good npm (nodejs based) scrapper libraries such as Cheerio and Puppeteer than makes scraping data a breeze. Puppeteer is particularly good as it is a "headless browser".

That’s a good idea. I might try that.
I spent ages trying to Match every transaction thinking that would give me a good measurement but it simply doesn’t work.

I spent some time talking to their support but they confirmed this was the way it worked.

Hi Jamie,

Since seeing your post a week or so ago, I’ve been playing with StockMarketEye on a 30 day trial, and I have to say I’m very impressed so far. For US developed software it has very good UK support (including a ‘for UK investors’ FAQ in the user manual). It took a while to get my 10+ year trading history in 4 accounts managed in Excel in there but now I have I think my days of Excel wrangling could be finally coming to a end ;-)

Since starting the trial there has been a major update so it seems to be very actively supported / developed and there is also an iOS companion app.
