ACCRA, June 3 (Reuters) - Ghana's gold production fell 30%
to 2.818 million ounces in 2021 from the previous year, reaching
its lowest level since 2008, Joshua Mortoti, President of the
Ghana Chamber of Mines said on Friday.
The drop caused the West African country to fall from its
position as top gold producer in Africa to second, he said.
Ghana has vied with South Africa in recent years for the
dominant position.
"A combination of concurrent reductions in the output of
both large and small-scale gold producers led to a 29.92 per
cent fall in the production of the country's dominant mineral,
gold," said Mortoti at the chamber's annual meeting.
