Australia's Alterity Therapeutics leaps most in 3 mths on patent grant

** Shares of Alterity Therapeutics  ATH.AX  rise as much as
16.7% to A$0.011, their best intraday gain since Sept. 20
    ** Biotech firm says a new composition of matter patent was
allowed by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, following an
expedited review 
    ** ATH now has 20 years of exclusivity over the substance it
has patented, which it is studying further as a therapy for
neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease and
Anzheimer's Disease 
    ** Stock hits highest level since Dec. 8
    ** Trading volumes near twice the 30-day average, with over
3 mln shares traded so far 
    ** ATH down 57.1% YTD, as of last close
