Description: A new Covid variant has triggered a global alarm and a market
selloff - even as the World Health Organization urges caution. Britain banned
flights from South Africa and neighboring countries and reimposed quarantine
for returning travelers from them, after the UK Health Security Agency said
the variant has a spike protein that is dramatically different to the one that
vaccines are based.
The European Union has since followed suit banning
flights - while India, Japan and Israel tightened border controls from the
region, sending markets sharply lower in Asia and Europe. Didi, the Chinese
ride-hailing app, may have only listed in New York in July but it might be
about to delist due to pressure on executives from Chinese regulators citing
concerns about data security.
