American Water Works misses quarterly profit estimates as expenses rise

April 29 (Reuters) - American Water Works AWK.N on Wednesday reported first-quarter profit below Wall Street estimates, as costs increased for the water and wastewater utility company.

Revenue growth was offset by higher operating expenses and increased depreciation and financing costs to support its current capital investment plan, the company said.

Shares of American Water Works fell 1.1% in after-hours trading.

Adjusted profit fell to $1.01 per share in the quarter ended March 31, down from $1.02 per share a year ago.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of $1.1 per share.

The Camden, New Jersey-based company also affirmed its 2026 adjusted profit per share forecast at between $6.02 and $6.12.

Earlier in April, American Water Works said it plans to invest an additional $134 million in infrastructure improvements in 2026.

Its first-quarter operating revenue came in at $1.21 billion, compared with $1.14 billion a year earlier.
