** Australian energy stocks .AXRJ rise 0.9% to 9202.9 points, highest since June 23

** Oil prices steadied in early trade after three straight sessions of losses as a U.S. trade deal with Japan signaled progress on tariffs and a poll indicated U.S. crude stocks fell last week O/R

** Heavyweight Woodside Energy WDS.AX gains 1.8% bolstered by Q2 revenue beat

** Ampol ALD.AX rises 2.6% to A$27.57, highest since February 24; stock 2nd top gainer on sub-index

** However, Santos STO.AX slips 0.4% after four straight sessions of gains

** AXEJ up 6.5% YTD
