CALM BEFORE THE STORM
U.S. stocks are subdued in the early portion of trading on Monday, with each of the major indexes showing modest declines ahead of a week filled with market catalysts.
Earnings season will decidedly pick up steam this week, with 178 S&P 500 companies scheduled to report earnings, including megacaps Microsoft MSFT.O, Alphabet GOOGL.O, Amazon.com AMZN.O, Meta META.O and Apple AAPL.O.
Year-over-year first-quarter earnings growth is currently tracking at 16.1%, according to LSEG data through Friday, up from the 14.4% at the start of April.
Lisa Shalett, CIO of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said in a note on Monday that "although we continue to believe that 2026 earnings, exhibiting 12%–13% growth, will drive a fourth year of S&P 500 gains, we remain cautious about ebullient 17%–20% profit-gain forecasts," saying that while markets can look past some factors as transitory, "corporate earnings cannot."
Also on tap this week are a flurry of policy meetings from global central banks, including the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of Japan.
Markets are completely pricing in that the Fed will hold rates steady at its policy announcement on Wednesday, according to CME's FedWatch Tool, although expectations have increased slightly in recent days that the central bank will cut rates by the end of the year as the roadblocks to Kevin Warsh's approval for the role have dissipated.
