Treasury yields drop as US job openings fall more than expected. Welcome to
Trading at Noon. I'm Elena Casas. Yields are falling today in the US as
investors grew increasingly uneasy about data showing the strength in the US
economy may be starting to unwind. Job openings in the US fell to 8.059
million in April, far lower than a Reuters poll of economists that predicted
8.35 million openings. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury is down
four basis points. Despite that, one portfolio manager told me earlier a
slight slowing in the economy could be good news for inflation.
I think we're starting to see some softening on inflation and that's a very
positive thing for the market, at least in the short term, but again it comes
down to Ken of said manufacture of soft landing. Can we still have economic
growth in the light of at the high interest rates that we've seen in
moderating inflation. So that still becomes a question mark in my opinion. But
for now, at least, the moderating inflation is a very positive sign for the
market.
Meanwhile, both WTI and Brent are down around 1.5%. Trading, respectively at
$73 to $77 a barrel. In a surprise move over the weekend eight OPEC+ producers
laid out a plan to phase out 2.2 million barrels a day in production cuts
starting in October. That unwinding adds jitters about oversupply in an
environment where traders are already spooked about high interest rates
hampering global economic activity. Yesterday, both contracts lost more than
3%. Wall Street's main indexes opened lower on Tuesday as concerns grew about
the health of the world's largest economy. The NASDAQ was leading losses,
while the Dow Jones was largely flat. Several measures of volatility have also
picked up, reflecting nervousness among traders, but safe-haven assets such as
the dollar are in positive territory. Shares in Paramount Global sank 11% this
after its top executives laid out a sweeping restructuring plan, including
cost cuts, asset sales and a possible joint venture for its streaming service.
Meanwhile, GameStop shares fell more than 7% after they soared as much as 21%
yesterday. The rally followed financial influencer Roaring Kitty Keith Gills,
Reddit post at the weekend that showed $116 million bet on the company. On the
other hand, shares of drug developer and Annexon are up more than 30% today.
That's after the company said its neuromuscular disease drug succeeded in a
late-stage trial. Well, that's Trading at Noon
