WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - A technology company that
won a landmark $5.7 billion patent infringement verdict against
Apple AAPL.O has asked a federal judge to tack on more
damages and interest, potentially exposing the iPhone maker to
hundreds of millions of dollars in additional liability.
Here are the details:
* A California federal jury in September awarded San
Diego-based Taction the largest-ever US patent infringement
award after finding Apple violated its patented technology
for haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches
* Taction in a filing on Friday said the verdict only covers
Apple sales from 2021 to late March and asked the court to
impose damages for the six months of sales since then
* Taction also asked the judge to award prejudgment interest
at California's 7% statutory rate, which would add at least
hundreds of millions of dollars to the $5.7 billion verdict
* “The size of the jury’s award is no reason to withhold
interest,” Taction told the court. The company is also seeking
post-judgment interest
* Apple has denied any wrongdoing and said it will appeal.
It has also asked the court to overturn the verdict
* Apple was ordered to pay $184.2 million in prejudgment
interest to medical-monitoring technology company Masimo this
month in a different intellectual property case after Masimo won
a jury award of $634 million last year
The case is Taction Technology v. Apple Inc, US District
Court for the Southern District of California, No.
3:21-cv-00812.
