STOXX DIPS, FINANCIALS OUTPERFORM
European markets saw a muted start on Tuesday, as investors weighed up the risks of a U.S. government shutdown and geopolitical developments in the Middle East, while safe-haven gold climbed to a fresh peak.
Most sectors were in the red, with energy .SEXP leading losses, down 0.9% on weaker crude prices. Financials .SXFP edged slightly higher, supported by gains in UBS UBSG.S, Switzerland's largest bank, amid newsflow around Bern’s push to strengthen the financial sector.
UBS shares rose as much as 1.8% after sources told Reuters both sides were open to compromise. The stock later trimmed gains after the bank criticised the proposed measures as "out of touch with reality." Among other financials, Italy's Azimut AZMT.MI climbed over 3%.
The pan-European STOXX 600 .STOXX was last down 0.3%.
