Italy's second-largest bank has sounded out the Del Vecchio family holding company, Delfin, to more than double its stake in insurer Generali GASI.MI to just under 20%, daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Thursday.
The proposal, which Delfin has turned down, was put forward by UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel's team to Delfin shortly after Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI tabled a €30.6 billion cash-and-share bid to offer to buy Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI and become the biggest investor in Generali.

The Franco-Italian carmaker is in talks with potential partners for two more manufacturing deals in Italy, including for its struggling luxury brand Maserati, CEO Antonio Filosa said on Wednesday during a parliamentary hearing in Rome.

EU antitrust authorities are expected to decide whether to approve or launch an in-depth investigation into the Saipem-Subsea7 SUBC.OL merger by July 22, MF daily reported on Thursday. EU authorities are also due to decide by June 29 whether to clear the deal or launch another in-depth investigation under the EU's Foreign Subsidies Regulation, the paper said.
