EU interior ministers on Tuesday called for tougher action against migrant smuggling networks and stronger returns policies after about 72,000 migrants entered Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta last week, triggering alarm across the bloc.

The Italian government on Tuesday extended a temporary cut on excise duties on diesel as part of efforts to help families and firms cope with soaring energy costs.

Rome will keep in place until August 25 a €17 cent-per-litre price cut introduced at the end of July, which was due to expire on August 6, at a cost of €245 million for state coffers.
