U.S. stock indexes struggled for direction on Wednesday and were set for sharp
monthly declines as investors worried how much the Federal Reserve will hike
interest rates to tame inflation, while chipmakers slid after tepid forecasts
from Seagate and HP Inc.  .N 
    At 1340 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  .DJI  was down 0.55% at
31,614.88. The S&P 500  .SPX  was down 0.47% at 3,967.54 and the Nasdaq
Composite  .IXIC  was down 0.42% at 11,833.393.
