SOFTS-Arabica coffee plumbs fresh 1-1/2-year low, sugar gains Updates prices
LONDON, June 4 (Reuters) - Arabica coffee futures on ICE fell to 1-1/2-year lows on Thursday, heading for weekly falls of more than 5% as dealers focused on the prospect of surplus supplies, while raw sugar gained.
COFFEE
* Arabica coffee KCc1 fell 1.9% to $2.4815 per lb at 1542 GMT, after hitting its lowest since November 2024 at $2.4795.
* Dealers noted the market remains focused on an expected bumper harvest from top grower Brazil, though near-term stocks in consuming countries and on the ICE exchange remain thin.
* Coffee production in Brazil in the 2026/27 season should hit 71.9 million bags, up from 63 million in the previous season, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
* A large harvest in Brazil should contribute to a wide global surplus of 9.5 million bags in 2026/27, up from a 1.2 million bag surplus in 2025/26, Rabobank said.
* Robusta coffee LRCc1 fell 0.3% to $3,360 a metric ton, its losses limited compared to arabica.
* "Farmers are unwilling to sell at these prices, except those in urgent need of cash," said a trader based in top robusta grower Vietnam.
COCOA
* London cocoa LCCc2 fell 1.9% to £3,006 per ton, but was heading for a second consecutive week of gains.
* Sales in top grower Ivory Coast have started to slow due to concerns about the impact of a looming El Nino, four sources told Reuters.
* The chief of top cocoa processor Barry Callebaut BARN.S said this week that El Nino weather conditions could drive up cocoa prices by a few thousand pounds per metric ton.
* New York cocoa CCc1 fell 2.6% to $3,965 a ton.
SUGAR
* Raw sugar SBc1 rose 0.2% to 14.26 cents per lb, having settled down 1% on Wednesday.
* Sugar production in Brazil's center-south region is expected to have fallen 14% in the first half of May compared with a year earlier, an S&P Global Energy survey showed.
* White sugar LSUc1 rose 0.4% to $446.40 a ton.
