RBC UNPACKS THE LOGIC BEHIND STAPLES SECTOR TURBULENCE

This earnings season just gone, European consumer staples stocks offered a revealing glimpse into how markets digest fundamentals. While many investors and analysts were caught off guard by the magnitude of share price moves, RBC argues that the market was, in fact, acting rationally.

"There is a strong correlation between changes in volume—and to a lesser extent sales—growth expectations with share price movements on recent results days," RBC noted.

This suggests that investors are increasingly treating volume growth as a proxy for long-term value creation, rather than focusing on short-term profitability metrics like margins or EPS.

L'Oréal OREP.PA emerged as a standout, with RBC noting it is "well on the way to rediscovering its volume cadence." The company's confidence in 4% market growth and its resilience compared to struggling peers like Beiersdorf BEIG.DE and Estée Lauder EL.N reinforce its premium valuation.

Shift is already visible in performance. British American Tobacco BATS.L has surged 42% year-to-date. L'Oréal, backed by strong volume recovery, is up around 10%, while Reckitt RKT.L has gained over 17%. Meanwhile, brewers like AB InBev have posted a 2% rise, but Heineken has lagged.

This reorientation has implications for how investors assess staples going forward. Companies with credible volume growth stories are being priced for future cash generation, while those relying on margin expansion or cost-cutting may struggle to convince.

In a sector often viewed as defensive and predictable, this year's moves show that fundamentals still matter, but the fundamentals investors care about are evolving.
