BHP, KGHM sign cooperation agreement as miners seek copper growth
BHP, KGHM sign cooperation agreement as miners seek copper growth LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Mining giant BHP BHP.AX and Polish copper producer KGHM KGH.WA have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore cooperation, the companies said on Tuesday, as miners look for new sources of copper supply to meet growing demand.
The non-binding agreement will allow the companies to assess potential collaboration in exploration, development-stage projects and the exchange of technical and operational expertise, although no specific projects have been identified.
Major mining companies have been seeking to expand copper resources on expectations of growing demand for the metal from electrification, renewable energy and data-centre investment.
The companies said the agreement could extend to projects beyond locations where they currently operate, although neither announced specific investments or joint ventures.
The agreement expands on cooperation the two companies already have in Chile, where they have been looking at ways to work together to reduce costs and improve the performance of their copper mines.
The new memorandum broadens discussions to potential opportunities globally, they said.
