July 15 (Reuters) - Groww parent Billionbrains Garage Ventures BILO.NS said first-quarter profit nearly doubled as the Indian online brokerage added more clients, sending its shares up nearly 8% in morning trade.
Market volatility during the Middle East conflict boosted trading in derivatives and commodities, the company had said last quarter.
The benchmark Nifty 50 .NSEI has fallen 4.4% since February, when the Iran war began.
Results were also helped by higher contributions from commodity derivatives, where active users rose 10.7% from the previous quarter to 435,000, Groww added.
The company, founded nearly a decade ago, is India's largest online investment platform by active users, with more than 50 million customers, according to its website.
"Ever since the launch of commodities derivatives trading by Groww, retail participation in the category has increased and that has worked well for the company," HDFC Securities analyst Amit Chandra said.
Groww said it expects revenue to continue diversifying beyond equity derivatives, offsetting the volatility-driven spike seen in the previous quarter.
Consolidated net profit rose to 7.35 billion rupees ($76.5 million) in the quarter ended June 30 from 3.78 billion rupees a year earlier.
Transacting users rose 24% from a year earlier and 4% from the previous quarter to 22 million.
It added 115,000 active National Stock Exchange clients during the quarter, while the industry as a whole lost a net 257,000 clients.
Revenue from operations jumped 66% to 15.01 billion rupees, while expenses rose 25%. Total customer assets increased 38% from a year earlier and 22% from the previous quarter.
Groww shares ended 6.2% higher at 216.33 rupees on Wednesday.
