WALL STREET SWINGS FOR GAINS AND MISSES AS OIL, TREASURY YIELDS CLIMB

US stocks moved lower straight out of the gate on Thursday and spent the entire session trying to claw their way back to green, paring losses throughout the session amid signs of progress in peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

That was easier said than done, with rising fuel prices keeping inflation worries front and center, and US Treasury yields touching multi-year highs.

The Nasdaq eked out a nominal gain, while the S&P 500 logged a slight decline. The Dow was the laggard, closing down 0.3%.

US and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the economic blockade, according to sources close to the talks.

Even so, the Iran-backed Houthi's missle attach on Saudi Arabia sent oil prices higher and exacerbated the global bond selloff, sending the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield US10YT=RR as high as 5.223% and pushing 30-year T-bond yields to their highest level since the last episode of "Friends" aired (2004).

Front month WTI CLc1 and Brent LOCc1 crude prices settled up 2.7% and 2.4% on the day.

In Fed news, Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammock and Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson both indicated that the inflation fight is far from over and additional rate hikes are probably waiting in the wings.

In Washington, the Trump-Xi summit got underway with a mix of high pomp and low expectations, other than stabilizing an often rocky relationship between the world's two largest economies. Tariffs, technology, rare earth minerals and the flow of oil from the Middle East are among topics likely to be swatted around the room.

On the sector level, communication services .SPLRCL and travel/leisure .SPCOMHOTL were among the outperformers, while gold & silver miners .XAU, Dow Transports .DJT, utilities .SPLRCU and materials .SPLRCM ended the session with the steepest percentage losses.

Chips .SOX declined but FANGS .NYFANG advanced, and growth .IGX topped value .IVX.

On Friday, the Trump-Xi show continues, the Commerce Department is due to release its August report on new orders for US-made durable goods, and the University of Michigan will take its second and final stab at September consumer sentiment.
