Container Corp of India's quarterly profit falls on weak domestic shipments, higher costs

Jan 29 (Reuters) - Container Corporation of India CCRI.NS reported a 9% fall in third-quarter profit on Thursday, hurt by rising expenses and a slowdown in its domestic segment.

The state-run rail logistics company's consolidated net profit fell to 3.34 billion rupees ($36.3 million) for the three months ended December 31, from 3.67 billion rupees a year ago.

The company's quarterly domestic segment revenue declined 5.5% year-on-year, compared with a 2.8% growth in the previous quarter and a 5.8% rise a year earlier.

An uptick in rail freight and other operating expenses pushed the company's total expenses up 6.53% to 19.67 billion rupees during the quarter.

Overall quarterly revenue rose 4.5% to 23.08 billion rupees.

KEY CONTEXT

Rail container volume growth during the quarter moderated after the end of the festive season, with analysts flagging muted growth for Container Corp amid rising competition and potential market-share losses.
