** Shares of Novavax Inc NVAX.O lead declines among
COVID-19 vaccine makers in 2022, as they recorded their worst
year ever
** NVAX, which has lost about ~93% of its value, began the
year with gains as the German vaccine commission backed its
COVID vaccine for adults, but later sunk as the vaccine maker
halved its sales forecast on low vaccine demand and supply glut
** Only about 69,000 NVAX COVID-19 vaccine doses have been
administered so far in the U.S. out of nearly 664 mln
administered in total, according to government data
** Moderna MRNA.O has fallen 30%, while Pfizer PFE.N and
partner BioNTech BNTX.O are down ~14% and ~42% in 2022
** During the year, the U.S. FDA authorized use of updated
shots, which target both the original coronavirus and Omicron
sub-variants, from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech in several age
groups
** B.Riley Securities analyst Mayank Mamtani says the
COVID-19 vaccine market is leading towards a commercial market
much like the flu market, despite the decline in vaccine demand
this year
** In 2021, BioNTech BNTX.O more than tripled, while PFE
was up ~60% and MRNA had gained ~143%
** The year draws to an end with the surge in COVID-19 cases
in China amid an abrupt end to its zero-COVID policy raising
concerns of widespread infection in the country with an
undervaccinated population
** China could be a big market if they become open to
accessing the innovative vaccines, which could represent upside
in the upcoming years - B. Riley Securities
