POLITICS

Italy has resolved differences with the European Central Bank over a draft budget amendment on the ownership of the Bank of Italy's gold reserves, Italian Treasury sources said on Thursday.

ECONOMY

High-tax Italy plans to apply a levy on shipments from non-EU countries worth up to 150 euros ($176.31) and intends to double its tax on financial transactions, as Rome seeks ways to fund costly budget amendments, official documents have shown.

Italy's biggest insurer Generali and French bank BPCE said on Thursday they had dropped plans to merge their asset management businesses in the absence of conditions necessary to make the deal viable.

The European Central Bank will take longer than expected to decide whether to give its clearance to Credit Agricole's CAGR.PA decision to bring its stake in the Italian lender above the 20% threshold, with a decision expected in mid-January, daily Il Messaggero reported on Friday.

Plans to impose an effective ban on selling new cars with combustion engines in the European Union have been abandoned, a senior EU lawmaker told German mass tabloid Bild on Thursday.

Italy's postal service, a state-backed financial conglomerate, said on Thursday it had raised its stake in Telecom Italia to 27.3%, buying France's Vivendi's residual 2.5% holding in the former phone monopoly for 180 million euros ($211.54 million).

The Italian steelmaker said on Thursday it would supply material to India's steel authority in a deal worth 500 million euros.
