Italy - Factors to watch on April 1

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Wednesday.

POLITICS

Italy's centre-left opposition warned Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni against pressing ahead with a reform of the electoral law that studies say could bolster her chances of re-election, cautioning on Tuesday that pushing it through parliament without consultation would amount to a show of force.

ENERGY

Italy is set to postpone to 2038, 13 years later than originally planned, the permanent shutdown of its coal-fired power plants, according to a bill passed by the lower house of parliament on Tuesday.

DEBT

Italy's Treasury said on Tuesday it would buy back four BTP bonds for up to 3 billion euros ($3.46 billion) at an auction for government bond specialists to be held at the Bank of Italy on April 2.

STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

China's Leapmotor said on Tuesday it had entered into an agreement to transfer to the subsidiaries of the Franco-Italian carmaker the carbon credits it generates in Europe and the UK over the rest of 2026.

Samsung said on Tuesday it had extended the maturity of a 1.6 trillion won ($1.05 billion) loan to StarPlus Energy, its battery joint venture with Stellantis.

Italian pension fund Enpam has reduced its stake in the bank to below 0.3%, daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Wednesday. Enpam previously held a 1.34% share when it took part in the lender's annual general meeting in February.

Alphavalue on Tuesday upgraded its rating on the Italian energy group to 'reduce' from 'sell'.

Citigroup on Wednesday raised its rating on the defence and aerospace group to 'buy' from 'neutral'.

The Italian engineering group said on Wednesday its unit Nextchem had won a contract to assist in the development of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Indonesia.

Shareholders of Italian broadcasting tower operators Rai Way and EI Towers have extended talks on a potential merger to June 15, they said late on Tuesday in a statement.

Rai Way is controlled by public broadcaster RAI, while EI Towers' main shareholders are Italian infrastructure fund F2i and the country's top private broadcaster MFE-MediaForEurope.

The Italian spirits group said on Tuesday it had established a 2-billion-euro EMTN funding programme. The 12-month programme will be subject to update on an annual basis.
