ECONOMY

EU lawmakers backed tighter controls on imports of agricultural products under a potential trade agreement with the South American trade bloc Mercosur, as Brussels tries to get sceptics on board to sign the EU's largest-ever trade accord.

(*) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged France and Italy to back a trade deal between the European Union and the Mercosur, adding he expected it to be signed on Saturday.

COMPANIES

STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

The European Commission proposed on Tuesday dropping the EU's effective ban on new combustion-engine cars from 2035 by allowing continued sales of some non-electric vehicles following intense pressure from Germany, Italy and Europe's auto sector.

Europe's second largest carmaker said on Tuesday the European Commission's proposals to support the auto industry's energy transition failed to address key challenges, including a roadmap for light commercial vehicles and flexibility on 2030 targets for passenger cars.

Lagfin, the Luxembourg-based holding company that controls the Italian drinks group, said on Tuesday it had reached an agreement with the Italian revenue agency over a tax dispute, paying 405 million euros over a four year period.

Italy's government has asked parliament to approve a 2.4-billion-euro ($2.82 billion) investment over 15 years for the maintenance and modernisation of its frigate fleet, a parliamentary document seen by Reuters showed.

The Italian shipbuilder on Tuesday set a goal of a 40% rise in revenues and a near doubling of core profits in its new five-year plan, expanding to the defence and underwater businesses while keeping its leadership on cruise ships.

Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira said on Tuesday the government would urge power regulator Aneel to start the process of terminating a contract with the local unit of Italian power company Enel ENEI.MI in Sao Paulo state.

With business performing better than expected, it is likely that the group will revise its strategy targets at the end of 2026 at a dedicated investor day, MF reported on Wednesday.

The appointment of Giulio Terziariol as deputy CEO is the first step in a reorganisation of the management team that CEO Philippe Donnet usually carries out every two years, MF also reported, adding that one of the first decisions will be the scope of Terziariol's responsibilities.

INSURERS

Italy's budget for 2026 will include an additional 1.3-billion-euro ($1.53 billion) contribution from insurance companies through a revision of charges on premiums for vehicles and vessels, a parliamentary document showed on Tuesday.

The bank's board has called an extraordinary meeting for December 22 to amend the lender's bylaws according to new rules that allow the outgoing board to draw up a slate of candidates for the board's renewal and that establish how to represent minority shareholders, Il Messaggero reported on Wednesday.

The water heating company said on Tuesday it will acquire industrial company Riello Group for 289 million euros. Ariston was advised by Mediobanca on the deal.

The Italian home appliance maker said on Wednesday it would be included in the STOXX Europe index as of December 22.

     German electrolysis equipment maker Thyssenkrupp Nucera NCH2.DE, a joint venture between ThyssenKrupp TKAG.DE and De Nora, expects order intake of between 350 million euros and 900 million euros in its current financial year, it said on Wednesday.

Alphavalue on Wednesday raised its rating on the engineering company to 'add' from 'reduce'.

Rome, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addresses Chamber of Deputies (from 1030 GMT) and Senate (from 1430 GMT) on upcoming EU summit in Brussels.

Rome, event dedicated to the implementation of the Italian strategy for quantum technologies with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Industry Minister Adolfo Urso, Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin (1300 GMT).
