BERLIN, July 2 (Reuters) - Orders for German engineering
companies rose 47% in April from the previous year due to
stronger demand from both domestic and foreign customers,
industry association VDMA said on Friday.
Domestic orders increased by 33% in May compared to the
previous year, while foreign orders rose 55%, VDMA said.
The monthly rise was below April's increase when orders
soared 72%. "But the mechanical engineering sector remains
clearly on course for growth," said VDMA chief economist Ralph
Wiechers in a statement.
"However, we are concerned about the tense situation in the
supply chains, as well as the renewed discussion about border
closures in the EU," he added, saying a patchwork of border
controls could jeopardise Europe's economic upswing.
