Utilities secure contracts in Poland's 2030 capacity market auction

GDANSK, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Poland completed its main capacity market auction for 2030 power delivery on Wednesday, with closing prices ranging between 465.03 zlotys and 511.51 zlotys ($128.74 and $141.61) per kilowatt per year, grid operator PSE said.

The country's biggest state-controlled utility PGE PGE.WA secured at least 1,399.218 megawatts in capacity obligations, including 1,097.718 MW under 15-year contracts, the company said in a regulatory filing.

PGE had earlier declared it would submit its planned gas-fired power plants for the auction, but did not disclose the outcome for those specific projects.

Energa ENGP.WA, another major Polish utility, won at least 498 MW in contracts mixing one-year and seven-year terms. Enea ENAE.WA also won one-year contracts for at least 661 MW, it said.

State-controlled Tauron TPE.WA estimated that total revenue from the auction could range from 3.83 billion to 4.22 billion zlotys between 2030 and 2046.

In a separate filing, Tauron said it would build a 600 MW gas-fired power plant in Jaworzno in southern Poland after securing the capacity contracts. The plant is estimated to cost between 2 million and 3 million zlotys per MW, it said.

Capacity markets are used to ensure reliable supply and encourage investment as Poland reduces its reliance on coal. The mechanism supports conventional power plants needed to provide electricity when intermittent renewable generation is low.

Under current European Union rules, however, such payments for high-emission sources are set to be banned from 2028. Warsaw has called for a new EU support mechanism to avoid a potential power gap from 2029.
