** UBS analyst Patrick Hummel says a panel hosted by the
brokerage reinforced its view that all-in battery electric
powertrain (BEV) strategies are the right approach for original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with Volkswagen VOWG.DE and
General Motors GM.N remaining the best-positioned names in the
sector
** BEV looks set to prevail in passenger cars and fuel cells
(FCV) are more likely to be adopted for long-haul trucks, Hummel
says
** According to speakers at a panel discussion, BEVs are
less complex, easier to integrate and cheaper to produce than
fuel cells, he says
** Because of personal cars' relatively low utilization,
it's impossible to break-even on total cost of fuel cell
ownership even if hydrogen was available for free, Hummel says
** He adds that fuel cells emit less CO2 at production, but
only remain "green" during usage if they run on green hydrogen,
while BEVs charged with green power are 2-3 times more efficient
** However, long-haul trucks remain potential use cases for
fuel cells as their life cycle is longer and they have a more
regional supply chain, Hummel says
