8 million passengers
 in August.

* JOHN LEWIS: British retailer the John Lewis Partnership reported a
deeper first half loss
, but said it was "well positioned" to deliver full year profit growth.

* STANDARD CHARTERED: Zambia's high court has ruled that Standard Chartered STAN.L does not have to pay $500,000 compensation to a former client it sold a now-defaulted Chinese property bond to at the height of the Asian country's real-estate crisis.

* HOUSE PRICES: British house prices showed the most widespread falls in more than a year-and-a-half in August as new buyer demand weakened against a backdrop of a weak economy, high inflation and uncertain interest rate outlook, a survey showed.

* PHARMA INDUSTRY: Britain's main pharmaceutical lobby group said foreign investment in the sector has fallen due to its approach to drug pricing.

* COMMODITIES: Oil prices retreated a tad on Thursday on weak demand in the United States and broad oversupply risks, gold prices edged lower, and copper prices on the LME slipped in early Asian trade, weighed by potentially lackluster demand.

* EX-DIVS: Intertek Group PLC ITRK.L and M&G PLC MNG.L will trade without entitlement to their latest dividend pay-outs.
