    ENERGY
    The Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which supplies gas from Russia
to Europe under the Baltic Sea, will be shut down from Aug. 31
to Sept. 2 for maintenance, Gazprom said  GAZP.MM  on Friday.
After maintenance is complete, flows of 33 million cubic metres

    Treasury announces sale of BTP Short bonds with relative
amounts to be auctioned on Aug. 25.
    
    ECONOMY
    Energy-intensive industries in Italy are modifying their
production to save energy as they struggle with soaring bills, a
top official at the ecological transition ministry said on

    MONTE DEI PASCHI  BMPS.MI 
     Italy's Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI may raise a
much-needed 2.5 billion euros in steps, Italian daily La
Repubblica reported on Sunday, as the bank looks to boost its

    One source had told Reuters that Monte dei Paschi could
split its cash call. 
    
    BANCA CARIGE  CRGI.MI , BPER  EMII.MI 
    The Boards of Directors of BPER, Banca Carige and Banca del
Monte di Lucca (bml) on Friday approved the merger of the two
lenders into BPER. The exchange ratios were set at 0.360 BPER
ordinary shares for each Carige ordinary share and 11,234 BPER
ordinary shares for each Carige savings share. Finally, the
exchange ratio of 0.045 BPER ordinary shares for each Bml

    ENEL  ENEI.MI 
    Italy's biggest utility has written down the value of its
main Russian subsidiary by 527 million euros ($530 million) as
it waits for the sale of Enel Russia  ENRU.MM  to be approved by
Moscow, the group said in its half-year financial statement.

     Enel Russia is seeking almost 23 billion roubles ($389.83
million) in damages from its wind turbine supplier, Germany's
