Ex-Fox legal head Dinh joins law firm Sullivan & Cromwell

Ex-Fox legal head Dinh joins law firm Sullivan & Cromwell

By David Thomas

- Former top Fox Corp FOXA.O lawyer Viet Dinh is joining Sullivan & Cromwell, the Wall Street law firm said on Tuesday, three years after Dinh departed Fox in the wake of its $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems.

Sullivan & Cromwell co-chairs Robert Giuffra and Scott Miller said in a statement that Dinh would assist the firm's clients in their "most consequential strategic, transactional and crisis-management matters.”

Dinh was the chief legal and policy officer at Fox and part of its senior management team when it agreed in April 2023 to settle Dominion's claims that it was defamed by false vote-rigging claims that were aired by the news outlet known for its roster of conservative commentators. Dinh left Fox at the end of 2023 but continued to advise its leadership, Sullivan & Cromwell said. He will be a partner in the firm's Los Angeles office.

In a statement released by Sullivan & Cromwell, Dinh said he looked forward to working on "transformational transactions and bet-the-company litigations and investigations for our clients.”

Dinh was a former U.S. attorney general under President George W Bush and an architect of the Patriot Act, the U.S. national security law enacted after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

He was a founding partner of the Washington, D.C.-based litigation firm Bancroft PLLC, known for work on behalf of right-wing political causes, and was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis after it absorbed Bancroft in 2016.

Dinh joined Fox in 2018. He received a lump-sum cash payment of $23 million as part of his separation agreement with the company. Since leaving the company, he became a principal at Palanquin Advisors, a venture capital firm, and sits on the board of directors of GrubHub parent Wonder and Irish building materials maker Kingspan Group, according to his LinkedIn profile.

A Sullivan & Cromwell spokesperson said Dinh will wind down Palanquin Advisors and transition his clients to the firm.

Lawyers at Sullivan & Cromwell are defending Republican President Donald Trump against charges that he falsified business records to cover up a $130,000 payment his former personal lawyer made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels for her silence before the 2016 presidential election about a sexual encounter she said she had with Trump years earlier. Trump has appealed his May 2024 conviction.

The firm is also representing Trump in his appeal to the New York Court of Appeals in the civil fraud case brought by Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James. A state appeals court last year preserved the case while tossing a half-billion-dollar penalty a judge had entered.
