GAIL India's quarterly profit more than doubles on growth in natgas marketing business

GAIL India's quarterly profit more than doubles on growth in natgas marketing business

- GAIL India's GAIL.NS first-quarter profit more than doubled, helped by strong growth in its natural gas marketing business, the state-owned gas distributor said on Friday.

Here are some details:

  • GAIL, India's top natural gas distributor by market share, said its net profit rose to 46.71 billion ($489.75 million) for the quarter ended June 30, from 18.86 billion rupees a year ago.

  • Imports of liquefied natural gas were supported by higher domestic demand as they replaced LPG and propane in the country, which are typically used for cooking, said analysts from PhillipCapital ahead of the results.

  • Supply disruptions from the Middle East, particularly Qatar, continued during the quarter, although they were partially offset by imports from other regions, PhillipCapital said.

  • The company also reported an inventory gain of 12.12 billion rupees, while cost of materials consumed went down by 19.8%.

  • The gas marketing segment, GAIL's largest revenue contributor through wholesale trading and natural gas distribution, reported an 11.1% rise to 310.03 billion rupees.

  • Revenue from its petrochemicals segment fell nearly 62%.

  • Its natural gas transmission segment, through which GAIL holds a 70% market share in the country, rose 8.4%.

  • GAIL's revenue from operations rose 12% to 389.82 billion rupees, while expenses climbed 3.8% to 337.8 billion rupees.

  • The company's shares rose as much as 4.9% after the results.
