U.S. stock indexes edged higher on Wednesday in a holiday-shortened trading
session, as data pointing to a softening economy raised hopes for a September
start to the Federal Reserve's policy easing.  .N 
    
    At 11:39 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  .DJI  was down 0.13% at
39,281.17. The S&P 500  .SPX  was up 0.23% at 5,521.95 and the Nasdaq Composite
 .IXIC  was up 0.44% at 18,107.878.
