GSK is having a leadership upheaval, with CEO Emma Walmsley stepping down in December. The British drugmaker said Monday insider Luke Miels will take over the role. He'll be tasked to deliver shareholder value and prepare for the next wave of R&D. Walmsley, the most senior female CEO in the UK, is leaving months before her September contract ends after nine years in the top job. Since taking over, she's overseen the separation of consumer healthcare group Haleon and turned GSK's focus to cancer and infectious diseases. That's as she drove efforts to counter both patent expiries and declining revenue from its best-selling medicines by 2030. However, she's struggled to win over investors due to concerns about GSK's drug pipeline. Miels will be tasked with delivering GSK's annual sales target of more than $53.7 billion by 2031. That's despite a challenging economic and geopolitical backdrop that includes potential US tariffs on the sector. Earlier this month, GSK announced plans to invest $30 billion in US research and development and supply chain infrastructure over five years. The drugmaker's shares rose 3% in early trading on Monday as investors welcomed the leadership change.
