WALL STREET DIPS WITH MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT, US JOBS IN FOCUS
Wall Street took its foot off the accelerator on Thursday with the S&P 500 .SPX and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC losing ground slightly and the Dow Industrials .DJI falling from record levels as investors reacted to a mixed bag of earnings and waited for Friday's U.S. jobs report.
Also, the latest hostilities dampened hopes for Middle East progress with renewed energy supply worries. U.S. crude oil settled up close to 3% after news that an Iranian parliament committee is reviewing a bill that would ban U.S. and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz and fine violators up to a fifth of the value of their cargo.
After three straight days of record closing highs for the blue-chip average, most Dow components finished red on Thursday with the biggest losses in Boeing BA.N and Salesforce CRM.N, both down more than 3%. However, Microsoft MSFT.O and Disney DIS.N helped limit the Dow's losses with gains of more than 2% apiece.
Among the S&P 500's 11 major sectors, only three advanced on the day. Energy .SPNY led the gainers, increasing 1.6%, with support from oil's rally, while industrials .SPLRCI and real estate .SPLRCR, both losing 0.83%, were the weakest groups.
In industrials, Honeywell Aerospace HONA.O led losses with a 23% tumble as supply constraints forced it to cut its annual sales target and forecast profit below estimates. The aerospace supplier debuted on the Nasdaq about a month ago after it was spun off from Honeywell HON.O.
The next biggest loser in industrials was Taser-maker Axon Enterprise AXON.O, which sank 14% after it reported a lower second-quarter gross margin.
Meanwhile, the iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF QUAL.Z scored a record close. However, the ETF, which includes companies with strong balance sheets and solid profitability, cut it close with just a 0.06% gain on the day.
