U.S. stock indexes were mixed in choppy trading on Thursday as investors weighed progress in trade negotiations with Japan against concerns about the monetary policy outlook, while a slump in UnitedHealth's shares weighed on the Dow. .N

At 13:30 EST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI was down 1.11% at 39,230.54.The S&P 500 .SPX was up 0.35% at 5,294.06, and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC was down 0.18% at 16,277.72.
