    POLITICS
    Italy will put forward former Economy Minister Daniele
Franco as its candidate for the executive board of the European
Central Bank to replace Fabio Panetta, a source said on Sunday,
confirming a report in Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper. 
    Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who joined the growing number
of Italians visiting Albania on holiday this summer, ensured
that a local restaurant owner was not left out of pocket after a
group of her compatriots fled without paying their bill.
    La Stampa and la Repubblica newspapers say the Treasury is
struggling to find the money needed to cover tax cuts and
additional spending expected in the coming budget. "The
government is seeking 20 billion euros and hopes for EU approval
for a bigger deficit," La Stampa said on Sunday.

    Entrepreneur Roberto Colaninno, chairman and CEO of scooter
maker Piaggio and one of Italy's best-known dealmakers, has
died, his investment company IMMSI said on Saturday. 
    
    BANKS
    The European Central Bank is preparing to send a letter to
Italy raising objections about the government's windfall tax on
banks' profits, the Corriere della Sera daily wrote on Friday.
    
    INTESA SANPAOLO  ISP.MI 
    Intesa Sanpaolo may consider smaller-scale acquisitions in
European regions where it operates and in key Mediterranean rim
countries to strengthen some of its core activities, according
to Marco Elio Rottigni, head of its International Subsidiary
Banks Division, in an interview published by Bloomberg on
Friday.
