Italy - Factors to watch on October 5

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Monday.

Reuters has not verified the newspaper reports, and cannot vouch for their accuracy. New items are marked with (*).

ECONOMY

Italy on Friday raised its economic growth forecasts and said the 2026 budget deficit would fall inside the European Union's limit for the first time in seven years, only to rise again from 2027.

Rome at present has no candidate for the top ECB job, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Friday, calling clarity over Christine Lagarde's future intentions.

COMPANIES

INTESA SANPAOLO ISP.MI, MONTE DEI PASCHI (MPS) BMPS.MI

Intesa Sanpaolo raised its takeover offer for Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI on Saturday, saying it would pay shareholders a further €800 million ($900 million) in cash if they reject MPS's counter plan.

(*) Italy's biggest bank Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI took a decisive step towards securing its takeover target Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI after the largest shareholder in MPS agreed to take up Intesa's improved offer.

The Del Vecchio family holding company Delfin, which holds a 17.6% stake in the Tuscan lender, committed to tendering its shares to Intesa's offer for MPS, Intesa said late on Sunday adding that Delfin would be voting against MPS's defence plan at the shareholder meeting on October 29.

(*) The move would give Delfin about €655 million and a 3.8% stake in Intesa Sanpaolo, daily Corriere della Sera reported on Monday.

GENERALI GASI.MI

Generali Italia CEO Giancarlo Fancel told daily Il Sole 24 Ore on Saturday that any tie-up involving MPS and UniCredit would likely serve different customer segments rather than directly compete with Generali's network. Fancel also dismissed concerns that Intesa's bid for MPS could disrupt the insurance sector, saying Generali aimed to widen its lead as Italy's top insurer.

WEBUILD WBD.MI, TREVI FINANZIARIA TFI.MI

(*) Despite confirming on Friday an offer price of €4.5 euros in cash for its bid on rival engineering and construction group Trevi, the builder had to raise its takeover price to €5.165 per share after it bought a 13.916% stake in Trevi at this price from Praude Asset Management.

Following the transaction, Webuild will hold 18.91% of Trevi.

(*) STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

California, New York and two dozen other states, cities and counties sued the US Transportation Department on Friday over its decision last week to finalize sharply lower vehicle fuel economy standards in a win for gasoline-powered vehicles.

Europe's uptake of electric vehicles is gaining momentum, with record sales so far this year driven by a slew of affordable models coming onto the market to bring carmakers in line with EU targets, according to a study.

(*) INTERPUMP ITPG.MI

Founder and Executive Chair CEO Fulvio Montipò said the group would continue to grow through acquisitions, regularly assessing targets deemed useful for its development, speaking in an interview with la Repubblica's weekly supplemente Affari & Finanza.

He added that diversification within the group is a factor that makes its individual businesses more competitive and said that succession plans are ready, supported by an established management team and the involvement of his four daughters.

(*) AMPLIFON AMPF.MI

Alphavalue on Monday raised the rating on the hearing aid company to 'buy' from 'hold' and raised the target price to €16.7 from €13.2.

(*) BRUNELLO CUCINELLI BCU.MI

RBC on Monday raised its rating on the fashion group to 'outperform' from 'sector perform'.
