LoDES Planning Application Approved
20.7 MWh VFB project moves to construction phase; maximum £10m DESNZ grant
support confirmed
Further to the announcement made on 31 March 2025
(https://irtools.co.uk/88/story/012ba01f-e4d9-4fce-9dcd-3bd874830ee6)
regarding the LoDES project, Invinity Energy Systems plc (AIM: IES) (OTCQX:
IESVF), a leading global manufacturer of utility-grade energy storage, is
pleased to confirm that the project has now been granted planning approval.
Separately, the Company has also received confirmation from DESNZ that the
project will receive a £10m grant, the maximum amount available.
With grid connection agreements and planning approval now in place at the site
in the South East of England, the project can now progress to construction
phase, with 20.7 MWh of Invinity Vanadium Flow Batteries (VFBs) expected to be
delivered to site before the end of this year.
Invinity's interest in the project is principally as a grid-tied, large-scale
Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) demonstration project. The now approved
planning application also allows for the development of a solar array on site.
As previously announced, the project is not conditional on the installation of
the solar array, however, the Company is currently in discussions regarding
this element of this project and will proceed with the solar array if such a
move to co-locate with a generation asset is deemed to be commercially and
operationally advantageous.
Once live, this project is expected to be the largest commercially operating
Vanadium Flow Battery in Europe and will play a significant role for Invinity
as an important reference site for new and existing customers.
Jonathan Marren, Chief Executive Officer at Invinity said:
"Engaging with the local planning authority on the benefits and safety
features of a vanadium flow battery compared to a lithium-ion battery was an
extremely insightful process and has reinforced our belief that our batteries
will be much more welcome than alternatives which often receive significant
opposition during the planning process.
"As always, we remain very grateful to DESNZ for continuing to support the
project and our technology and that the full amount of the grant has been
confirmed.
"We look forward to delivering the batteries to site, experiencing the
installation and commissioning process as a developer as well as a
manufacturer and showcasing how they can generate revenue whilst providing
vital flexibility to the UK grid."
