** Shares of drugmaker Ionis Pharmaceuticals IONS.O rise 17% to $50 premarket

** Co says its drug, olezarsen, reduced triglyceride levels by up to 72% in people with severe hypertriglyceridemia in two late-stage studies

** The drug also cut acute pancreatitis events by 85%

** Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition where fat levels in the blood are too high, raising the risk of heart disease and pancreatitis

** Triglyceride are a type of fat in the blood that the body uses for energy

** Co plans to submit a supplemental marketing application by the end of the year

** Olezarsen was approved by the FDA last year to treat familial chylomicronemia syndrome, a disorder that prevents the body from breaking down fats and is characterized by extremely high levels of triglycerides

** As of last close, stock up 22% YTD
