    POLITICS
    A Rome court on Friday ordered a group of migrants detained
in camps built in Albania to be transferred to Italy, sources
said, dealing a fresh blow to a plan by Prime Minister Giorgia
Meloni to curb irregular sea arrivals.
    
    ECONOMY
    Italy Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on Saturday said
the European Union should weigh options to safeguard its
industry from any U.S. tariffs, Italian media reported. He added
his government was worried about the U.S. tariff threat.
    January PMI manufacturing January data (0845 GMT).
    ISTAT releases basket of goods used to calculate inflation
in 2025 (0900 GMT) and January flash CPI and HICP data (1000
GMT).
    Transport Ministry releases January car sales data (1700
GMT).
    January state sector borrowing requirement data.

    The Tuscan bank's acquisition of bigger rival Mediobanca
would be challenging to implement if the Tuscan bank's bid
succeeded, Fitch Ratings said on Friday.
    Moody's on Friday affirmed both Mediobanca's and Monte dei
Pashi's issuer ratings, while lowering to negative the outlook
on Mediobanca and changing to positive that on Monte dei Paschi.

    UniCredit on Sunday disclosed a 4.1% stake in Generali, a
move that the bank said had no strategic intentions but which
increases CEO Andrea Orcel's bargaining power in the game of
chess taking place in Italian finance.
    Italy's No.2 bank remains focused on its takeover bid for
Banco BPM and its stake in Commerzbank, a spokesperson for
UniCredit said on Saturday, after two sources confirmed a report
about an investment in Italy's biggest insurer.
    Italy's Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on Saturday
denied a report about his German counterpart Robert Habeck
seeking his help to block UniCredit's takeover ambitions on
Commerzbank. La Repubblica reported the talks between Giorgetti
and Habeck had taken place at the end of December. Giorgetti
said Germany had no need to request his help as governments are
entitled to have a say in matters affecting the provision of
credit and Germany would take its own decisions on its home
turf.
    A person close to the matter on Sunday denied reports about
UniCredit having built a stake of around 3% in Mediobanca.
    In comments to Sunday's Corriere della Sera UniCredit CEO
Andrea Orcel defended the reasons behind his moves on Banco BPM
and Commerzbank and said that while the two deals did not pose
an immediate threat in terms of staff levels, the industry's
trends did, but any future "difficult" decisions would be taken
in agreement with workers' representatives.

    When its board meets to approve full-year results on Feb. 11
as well as a strategy update, Italy's third-largest bank is
expected to also call a shareholder meeting to approve raising
the price of its buyout offer to gain full control of Anima,
Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday. 
    
    STMICROELECTRONICS  STMMI.MI 
    The French-Italian computer chip maker is considering cuts
of up to 6% of its workforce or 3,000 workers in its French and
Italian plants as part of a restructuring programme, Bloomberg
News reported on Friday citing anonymous sources.
    
    ITALGAS  IG.MI 
    CEO Paolo Gallo told reporters on the sidelines of an event
at the weekend he expected the 2i Rete Gas deal to close at the
end of the first quarter or start of the second. He also
confirmed that the capital increase needed to finance the deal
would be in the order of 1 billion euros. He said the antitrust
was likely to ask them to sell off some assets in areas where
Italgas and 2i Rete Gas had been sole competitors.
