Ironwood Pharma tumbles as bowel disease treatment misses secondary goals in trial

** Shares of drugmaker Ironwood Pharmaceuticals IRWD.O
down about 29% to $10.8 premarket
** Co experimental treatment for a condition associated with
chronic intestinal failure failed to meet two secondary goals,
in a specific set of patients, in a late-stage trial
** The treatment, however, met the main study goal of
reducing dependency on supported nutrition in patients
** The candidate, called apraglutide, was tested in 164
adult patients with short bowel syndrome with intestinal failure
(SBS-IF), a condition which might lead to serious,
life-threatening complications
** Patients injected with apraglutide showed reduction in
weekly parenteral support (PS) volume when compared to a placebo
in week 24 of the trial.
** When tested in a specific subset of patients, the
treatment did not meet the end goal of lowering dependency on
supported feeding when they were off PS for one week or one day
during week 48 of the trial.
** As of last close, IRWD stock up 32.2% YTD
