Italy - Factors to watch on July 24

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Thursday.

POLITICS

Italy and Algeria agreed to work together to fight terrorism and control migration during an intergovernmental meeting in Rome on Wednesday, while companies signed off on deals in sectors including energy and telecommunications.

DEBT

Treasury sells 2.25-2.75 billion euros in 2.10% BTP Short bonds due Aug. 26, 2027 and 1.25-1.5 billion euros of 1.10% BTPei bonds due Aug. 15, 2031. Subscriptions close at 0900 GMT.

Treasury announces sale of 6-month BOT bills, with relative amounts to be auctioned on July 29.

COMPANIES

(*) UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

Chief Executive Andrea Orcel confirmed in an interview with Corriere della Sera on Thursday plans to reduce the bank's  stake in insurer Generali GASI.MI, but said options were open with regards to a partnership for the distribution of their products.

Orcel also said UniCredit had used 4 billion euros of capital for the stakes in Germany's Commerzbank CBKG.DE and Greece's Alpha Bank ACBr.AT, which would yield 800 million euros in net profit, that would grow over time. The Italian lender has another 5 billion euros which it could use to boost distribution, for acquisitions or to buy more stakes like those in Commerzbank and Alpha if opportunities arise, the executive added.

The group's sales in the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association fell by 12.3% in June, while the overall market shrank by only 5.1%, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said on Thursday.

The Cassino plant in central Italy will close for the summer a week earlier than scheduled, starting on Friday, and will not resume activity on August 18, as planned, but in September, due to a lack of orders, MF daily reported on Thursday, citing trade union sources.

The Italian government is closely following news about a possible sale of the truckmaker to India's Tata Motors TAMO.NS, Industry Minister Adolfo Urso told a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday.

(*) The Italian energy group has received four offers for the sale of Enibioch4in, which produces biomethane within biofuel unit Enilive, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Thursday. The offers are from Goldman Sachs Asset Management biomethane business Verdalia Bioenergy, Vesper Infrastructure Partners, Vauban Infrastructure Partners and Kingston Capital, the newspaper added.

The Italian oil major has found that some oil purchases coming from the market were contaminated with organic chlorine, a spokesperson for the Italian energy group said on Wednesday.

The Italian utility confirmed its
full-year EBITDA target
 at the high end of the forecast range of 1.2-1.4 billion euros, as it posted on Thursday higher revenues, lower EBITDA and lower net profits for the first half of the year.

ITALGAS IG.MI

(*) Europe's biggest gas distributor said on Thursday its adjusted core earnings rose 27.8% in the first half of 2025, driven by the acquisition of smaller rival 2i Rete Gas.

The group will hold a conference call at 1200 GMT.

ENERGY

Italian energy authority ARERA will ask electricity providers to explain their pricing policies in 2023-2024, the watchdog's president Stefano Besseghini said in a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday, adding that sanctions could follow "if necessary".

The Italian luxury outerwear group reported on Wednesday a 1% decline at constant exchange rates in second quarter revenues, with its key eponymous brand affected by a decline in tourist spending in Europe and Japan.

STMICROELECTRONICS STMMI.MI

(*) The company, one of Europe's largest chipmakers, reported on Thursday a surprise second-quarter loss of $133 million, missing the average $56.2 million profit expected by analysts in an LSEG poll.

JUVENTUS FC JUVE.MI

The Italian football club said on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with German soccer team Werder Bremen for the disposal of player Mbangula for 10 million euros ($11.74 million).
