Italy - Factors to watch on June 19

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Thursday.

ECONOMY

The digital euro will be designed in a way that poses no threat to the overall liquidity held by the banking system, top European Central Bank policymaker Fabio Panetta said, adding that the ECB could anyway counter any hit to liquidity.

The United States' "confrontational" trade stance towards Europe is a consequence of U.S. efforts to give Russia a seat in international forums and weaken its ties with China, Panetta also said on Wednesday.

Panetta told a student conference in Milan he believed the European Union was paying the price for taking a firm stance against Russia in light of the war in Ukraine.

Milan state prosecutors have heard testimony from UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel and a Mediobanca executive as they look into the government's sale of a 15% stake in Monte dei Paschi di Siena to a small group of investors in November, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

EU antitrust regulator is expected to approve UniCredit's bid for Banco BPM on Thursday, subject to conditions such as the sale of branches, two Italian newspapers reported. However, "no decisions will be taken by the European Union" on the conditions set out by the Italian government under the golden power rules, EU Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podestà was quoted as saying by daily MF.

The oil service group said on Thursday it had been awarded a FEED (Front End Engineering Design) contract by Sonatrach for  the Phosphate Integrated project for fertilizer production in Algeria.

The digital bank could issue a profit warning due to possible further writedowns, the daily MF said on Thursday. The board has not yet decided whether to announce this immediately or wait for the quarterly results in August, when the Banca Ifis bid for illimity will be concluded. The newspaper added that illimity did not respond to a request for comment.

The Italian market regulator Consob said on Wednesday it had temporarily suspended the NUO Octagon's bid for the inventor of the octagonal moka coffee pot, requesting additional information.
