ECONOMY
The government on Saturday extended to July 3, from June 6, a temporary cut on excise duty on fuels as part of efforts to help families and firms cope with high energy costs. The measure has been extended several times, and progressively scaled back, since it was introduced in March in response to the energy shock triggered by the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
Under the latest extension, the cut in excise duty on diesel will be reduced to 0.05 euros per liter from 0.10, while the reduction for petrol will remain at 0.05 euros. The extensions, costing around 150 million euros ($172.79 million), will be finance by higher-than-anticipated VAT revenues in May, the government said.
