Kansai Electric to decommission 2 units at Gobo oil-fired power station by mid-2026

TOKYO, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Japan's Kansai Electric Power 9503.T said on Friday it will decommission two units at its Gobo oil-fired power station in western Japan by June 2026, following a comprehensive review of aging equipment, low utilization, and environmental impact.

The No.1 unit will shut by June 30, 2026, while the No.2 unit, mothballed since 2019, will close by October 31 this year.

The power station in Wakayama prefecture began commercial operations in 1984. A company spokesperson said the fate of the remaining No.3 unit has not yet been decided.

Kansai Electric has resumed all seven nuclear reactors by fiscal 2023, the most among Japanese utilities. As a result, its power mix shifted from 59% thermal and 27% nuclear in fiscal 2019 to 39% thermal and 48% nuclear in fiscal 2024.
