TOKYO, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Some Japanese utility companies restarted their nuclear reactors shut earlier for maintenance and refuelling, while others have shut some, bringing the total number of reactors in operation in Japan to 11 as of Wednesday, with a combined capacity of 10,647 MW.
Kyushu Electric Power 9508.T restarted the 1,180-megawatt (MW) No.4 reactor at its Genkai nuclear power station in southern Japan on October 17, and shut the 890-MW No.1 reactor at its Sendai nuclear power station the previous day, according to a company spokesperson.
The company plans to reopen the Sendai unit in mid-December.
Kansai Electric Power 9503.T also restarted the 870-MW No.4 reactor at its Takahama nuclear power station in western Japan after scheduled maintenance and refuelling on October 16, its spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Shikoku Electric Power 9507.T shut the 890-MW No.3 reactor at its Ikata nuclear power station in western Japan on October 11 for planned maintenance and refuelling, with plans to bring it back online in late December, a company spokesperson said.
Many companies are undergoing a re-licensing process to meet stricter safety standards implemented after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Prior to the disaster, Japan's utility firms operated 54 reactors in total.
The table below shows the status of Japan's nuclear power plants.
The regional utilities are: Chubu Electric Power 9502.T, Chugoku Electric Power 9504.T, Hokkaido Electric Power 9509.T, Hokuriku Electric Power 9505.T, Kansai Electric Power 9503.T, Kyushu Electric Power 9508.T, Shikoku Electric Power 9507.T, Tohoku Electric Power 9506.T and Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) 9501.T.
In the table, the companies are referred to by their regional names.
Japan Atomic Power Company (Japco), a nuclear energy company, owns two reactors.
