UPDATE 1-L3Harris gets $6 billion Lockheed Martin contract for THAAD propulsion production Adds details on contract and background throughout
Sept 29 (Reuters) - L3Harris Technologies LHX.N said on Tuesday it had received a contract valued at more than $6 billion over seven years from Lockheed Martin LMT.N to expand propulsion production for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
The contract is tied to a July Department of War initiative to quadruple THAAD production under which Lockheed Martin, the system's prime contractor, agreed to significantly increase output of the missile-defense interceptor.
THAAD is a missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.
Melbourne, Florida-based L3Harris produces THAAD's Solid Rocket Boost Motors (SRBMs) and Liquid Divert and Attitude Control Systems (LDACS) for the Missile Defense Agency.
The company said it will build a new facility to support the increased SRBMs and LDACS production.
L3Harris signed an agreement with DoW and Lockheed in July to ramp up propulsion production for the system.
