US STOCKS CLOSE SLIGHTLY HIGHER WITH NVIDIA ON DECK
U.S. stocks closed out a choppy session with modest gains that saw the S&P 500 .SPX rise as much as 1.1% as investors awaited earnings from AI heavyweight Nvidia NVDA.O, which gained nearly 3% as the biggest boost to the benchmark S&P index.
The chipmaker highlights the tail end of earnings season, which has also brought about results from several retailers, including Target TGT.N, which slumped almost 3%, and Lowe's LOW.N, which rallied nearly 4%.
Technology .SPLRCT and communication services .SPLRCL led S&P 500 sector gainers while energy .SPNY stumbled more than 1% as crude prices settled down more than 2% on signs the U.S. was making a fresh push to bring about an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
After Nvidia results, markets will receive the long-delayed September payrolls report Thursday morning for insight on the health of the labor market.
Expectations for a December cut were further dented on Wednesday after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said it would not be publishing the closely watched employment report for October, but will combine nonfarm payrolls for that month with November's report after the recently ended government shutdown prevented the collection of data for the household survey.
